Voters in the North Warren school district will be asked to approve a half-million dollar capital project to upgrade lighting at the parking lot and bus garage and improving the baseball field.

The district is seeking approval to tap $551,000 from reserve funds for the project. Superintendent Michele French said the project would include converting the lighting at the parking lot and the bus garage to LED exterior fixtures, which will be more energy and cost-efficient. In addition, the plan calls for installing an accessible walkway to the baseball field and adding safety netting.

Other parts of the project are to add an elevator to an existing shaft in the elementary wing to help people get around the facility. School officials also plan to make renovations to the technology classroom, according to French.

“We are upgrading the ventilation system to allow for a full welding program, a much-needed resource for students interested in this skilled trade,” she said in an email.

Voters also will decide the district’s proposed $13.58 million budget, which increases the tax levy 1%, which is below the district’s tax cap.

Total spending would increase by $164,000, or 1.22%, over the current year.

French said the Board of Education and administration worked hard to put together a budget that maintain programs, continuously improves facilities and is mindful to the taxpayers.

Among the new initiatives are starting the Young Scholars program through BOCES for grades 4-5, adding an after-school support room for grades 4-6 and adding Advanced Placement courses in the social studies department.

There is a contested race for the North Warren Board of Education. Incumbents Paul Buckman and Jason Willette are seeking re-election to two three-year seats and are being challenged by Dave Iasevoli and Katelyn Hill.
