A severe thunderstorm that rolled through southern Baldwin County caused major damage at the Foley Sports 5-Plex and Alabama Gulf Coast Zoo early Sunday morning.
The storm packing winds of more than 60 mph hit Foley around 8:15 a.m. Those winds were strong enough to toss bleachers onto baseball diamonds, topple fences, and knock down trees at the sports complex on Cater Lee Way. Protective netting around a softball field was also ripped apart. No injuries were reported.
Foley Athletic Assistant Andre Shoots told FOX10 News that all games and practices scheduled for Monday have been canceled while crews work to make repairs to the damage.
Softball and baseball tournaments scheduled to start Monday have also been placed on hold as the park works to assess the severity of the damage.
The storm also caused problems in Gulf Shores. The Alabama Gulf Coast Zoo will be closed until further notice as workers rush to fix the damage.
According to the zoo, all animal enclosures are intact and no animals were injured. But limbs were snapped, several trees were knocked down, and some buildings suffered damage.
The zoo is asking for volunteers to help with cleanup on Monday. Anyone wishing to help is asked to bring glove, rakes, and wheelbarrows to remove debris from the property.
